Battleground One
By J. R. Gordon MartialArtsRadio.com
Friday night, November 23, 2007, the Red and Jerry's Event Center presented their MMA show, Colorado Cage Wars. Other promoters have held shows at this venue, but this was the initial foray into promoting for the event center itself. The fight card filled out with new combatants, female competitors and local fan favorites.
Bout one: Isiah Amador Vs Blair Ryan. The competitors clinched early and Amador scored the takedown, but was quickly swept by Blair who ended in side control. From there Blair transitioned to full mount before trying to set in a Kimura shoulder lock submission. That attempt failed, but Blair transitioned to an armbar and at 2:38 of round one he sunk it in for the tapout victory.
Bout two: Ryan McKee Vs Johnny Martinez. Martinez rushed into the clinch, but McKee jumped to standing guard to try for the guillotine choke. Martinez escaped and each fighter landed strong punches. They clinched again and again McKee tried to sink the guillotine choke. Martinez pulled his head free and scored with a leg trip takedown. From his back McKee tried for a triangle choke and when that failed he transitioned to an armbar submission. Martinez escaped the multiple submission attempts, but in the ensuing scramble McKee took back control and was able to sink in the Rear-Naked-Choke (RNC) for the submission win at 1:53 of round one.
Bout three: Dannette Benimmino Vs Ann Wybron. Both fighters started with aggressive strikes before Beniamino got the takedown to land in the guard of Wybron. Wybron kept an active guard throughout the round but it was Beniamino who controlled position and landed the stronger strikes from the top throughout the entirety of the round.
Round two began with strong punches from Wybron that were answered in kind from Beniamino. When the bout entered into clinch range it was Wybron who had the advantage, but that was negated when Beniamino got a hip toss takedown and for the rest of the round she again maintained top position and landed more Ground-and-Pound (GNP) action.
Round three again had both fighters coming to the middle of the cage to trade punches to begin the round. Beniamino then used good knee strikes to set up another takedown. From inside the guard of Wybron Beniamino landed a series of elbow strikes, but Wybron was able to loop an arm around the neck of Beniamino and at :53 of round three Wybron got the tapout win with the guillotine choke.
Bout four: Nick Bushman Vs Mike Mitchelle for the Colorado Cage Wars 145 lb. title. Buschman trapped the first kick thrown by Mitchell and used it to score a slam takedown. Buschman then worked GNP before standing to escape an ankle lock attempt from Mitchell. From standing Buschman landed more strong strikes before dropping into the guard of Mitchell. Mitchell set in a tight triangle choke off of his back, but Buschman picked him up and slammed him. Mitchell however, held onto the choke but Bushman refused to tap. Buschman maneuvered himself into position to strike the head of Mitchell and at 1:27 of round one the referee stopped the bout due to unanswered strikes giving Buschman the win and the title.
Bout five: Andrew Aldaco Vs Will Robinson for the Colorado Cage Wars 170 Lb. title. Robinson started with a strong leg kick and Aldaco answered with one of his own. Robinson then threw a series of strikes that backed Aldaco across the cage, but not to be outdone Aldaco threw a flurry of his own that pressed Robinson into the opposite side of the cage. From the clinch Aldaco jumped to guard and pulled Robinson to the mat. From the bottom Aldaco set in armbar, before switching to a triangle choke attempt. Robinson nullified the submission attempts and after escaping he worked his best GNP of the night. Aldaco worked his way back to standing then got a double leg takedown and was working between GNP and passing the guard when round one ended.
Round two had both fighters starting with aggressive striking and Aldaco was rocked, but Robinson landed an illegal knee strike and the referee stopped the bout to give Aldaco time to recover and to take a point from Robinson. Upon the restart Robinson landed several leg kicks and Aldaco pulled guard. From off of his back Aldaco kept Robinson busy defending armbar and triangle submission attempts. Robinson weathered the submission storm and worked more GNP after escaping. During a scramble for position Robinson took back control and was able to get his hooks in and land some solid shots while on the ground. Aldaco escaped back control and the round ended with Robinson landing GNP while Aldaco continued to explore submission opportunities.
Round three saw both combatants landing good strikes before Aldaco jumped to guard and pulled Robinson down with him. Aldaco continued to display his active guard and at 1:22 of round three he sunk in the armbar and when Robinson tapped out Aldaco won the title.
Bout six: Travis Sherman Vs Travis Phippin. This was the first professional bout of the evening. Phippin immediately rushed in for, and got the double leg takedown and from side control he transitioned to the back of Sherman and at :28 of round one he sunk in the RNC for the victory.
Bout seven: John Cronk Vs Chris Jones in the professional Main Event bout of the night. Cronk started out with a probing jab and Jones slipped under it to clinch and get the early takedown. Cronk escaped being mounted and absorbed punishment while turtled before working back to his feet. Jones landed a good barrage of punches and knee strikes to a visibly stunned Cronk before taking him down. Cronk again weathered a strong flurry of strikes before working his way back to his feet. Once standing Jones again scored well with strikes at all levels and from multiple angles. Jones then again scored a takedown and secured back control. Cronk escaped back control with a sweep, but in the transition Jones set in a triangle choke and he got the tapout win at 3:17 of round one.
Red and Jerry's and Colorado Cage Wars thanked the fans for joining them at their first show and promised, "Then next one will be twice as good."
