It was on this date in Denver Colorado 14 years ago that the UFC had their debut show. The now legendary Gracie family chose Royce Gracie to bring their brand of Jiu-Jitsu into the United States from Brazil and let that style be showcased in the now famous octagon.
Royce fairly easily rolled (pun intended) through his competition that night beating a one-gloved boxer in Art Jimmerson and taking out Gerard Gordeau in the finals with a choke.
In the years following the sport would be called human cockfighting and spend some time actually being banned from cable television. Now however, with free shows on Spike television, hundreds of promotions in the United States alone, sanctioning by many states, reality based television shows, Pay-Per-View shows being held on several continents and events making millions of dollars each show with fans literally world wide it's safe to say that the sport is here to stay.
Just don't forget, it all started here in Denver, Colorado with a skinny Brazilian guy doing moves on the ground that most of us had never thought of as legitimate fighting techniques. From there it became the world wide phenomenon that we all enjoy so much.
