Kick Down 45: Season's Beatings II: RESULTS
kd45results.jpgBy J. R. Gordon, MartialArtsRadio.com

On a cold and snow filled winter's eve, a contingent of dedicated Colorado fight fans made it out to the Fat City event center in Littleton Colorado for the Kick Down's last fight show of the year.  The show aptly titled, "Season's Beatings II" featured three title matches including the first ever Kick Down women's MMA title bout.

Bout one: Aqil Sharif Vs Chase Rickard in a Modified Muay Thai bout.  There was back and forth action between the two fighters for all three rounds with Rickard mainly landing punches while Sharif got off a good combination of hand foot strikes before switching to seemingly nonstop knees while in clinching range.  The unanimous winner on the score cards after three rounds was Sharif.

Bout two: Dia Csay Vs Heather Conry in a women's modified Muay Thai bout.  There was great nonstop action from each fighter with Conry landing the stronger knee strikes while clinched and Csay with accurate head punches and body kicks from the outside.  Again the judges had to tally their score sheets and the winner was Csay by way of unanimous decision.

The rest of the action this night was Mixed Martial Arts bouts.

Bout four: Mitchell Alexander Vs Weldon Coonce.  Alexander maintained good ground control through round one while Coonce was able to maintain positional dominance, set the pace and had the better striking for rounds two and three.  The judges called this one for Coonce by was of unanimous decision.

Bout five: Jake Sukia Vs Nick Olson.  Sukia jumped to guard early, but from top position Olson worked GNP for most of the round.  Olson briefly had back control and tried to sink in the RNC, but Sukia scrambled back to standing.  On their feet Olson scored well with a hard body kick and followed that with a hard left hook that gave him the knock out win at 2:57 of round one.

Bout six: Greg Shipporeit Vs Douglas Martinez.  Shipporeit tried for, and got the takedown after multiple attempts, but Martinez reversed once on the ground.  After working back to standing Shipporeit again got the takedown and worked strong GNP to end round one.  Round two had Shipporeit again get the takedown then he worked GNP to get the verbal submission at :42 of round two.

Bout seven: Matt Vigil Vs Todd Kornfield.  Each round started played out with good kicks from Kornfield to start, then Vigil getting a takedown into a GNP attack.  When asked to score the judges saw it as an unanimous decision win for Vigil.

Bout eight: Adam Martinez Vs Joe Cardeli.  Martinez started off with multiple takedown attempts and Cardeli countered well and landed solid strikes.  Near the end of the round Martinez scored the takedown and landed several unanswered elbow strikes garnering him the knock out win at 2:27 of round one.

Bout nine: Louise Johnson Vs Cat Albert for the women's Kick Down Bantamweight MMA title.  The first two and a half rounds played out exactly the same; Albert shot for and got the takedown then transitioned to a very skilled and fast paced GNP attack while Johnson looked to escape or set up a submission.  In the latter part of round three Johnson's patience paid off and she set in a very tight triangle choke.  Albert defended the submission for an extended period of time, but in the end Johnson was the winner when at 2:24 of round three Albert lost consciousness from the choke.  Louise Johnson is now the first ever Kick Down women's MMA title holder.

Bout 10: Nathan Gates Vs Prentice Ingram for the Kick Down men's Lightweight MMA title.  The bout started off with Ingram landing strong leg kicks before the fight went to the canvas for what was so far the most technical grappling of the night.  Round two saw each fighter with good escapes, submission attempts, GNP and transitions.  For the third round Ingram landed several very strong spinning back kicks that landed well, including one that pushed Gates across most of the ring.  After backdoor escaping a topside guillotine attempt from Ingram it was Gates that threw an illegal upkick that had the referee taking a point for the illegal tactic.  After restarting, Gates landed a series of strong knees when clinched just as the bell ended round three.  Again the judges had to make the call and they unanimously saw it as a wing for Ingram making him the new Kick Down Lightweight MMA title holder.

Bout 11: Bryant Craven Vs Max Smith for the Kick Down professional Welterweight MMA title.  Both fighters landed strong kicks to start, then Smith got a hip toss takedown.  Craven was very active off of his back with multiple submission attempts.  Smith defended by way of striking and continually working to improve his position.  Craven stayed committed to his submission strategy and it paid off at 3:27 of round one when he sunk in the triangle choke for the tapout submission victory to retain his title.

Congratulations to the fighters for closing out the year with a great night of fights, and thanks to the fans who braved the difficult driving conditions to support them.

With the new year approaching fast MartialArtsRadio.com wants to wish everyone Happy Holidays and a safe and prosperous new year.  See you at the fights.

Best in Health and Training, J. R. "Crusher" Gordon.

My Fight of the Night; Fo Sho it was Louise Johnson v Cat Albert. Cat breaks LJ's nose early in the first round and is putting on a GNP clinic. Louise shows good defense and managed to avoid major damage for most of 2 1/2 rounds. (Intreject a brief referee stopage on the ropes for a breast exposure problem....fight resumes) LJ keeps cool on the ground and patiently waits and in round 3 locks in a NASTY triangle choke while Cat fights it off for like 40 seconds, only to barely tap once prior to falling unconsious. Seriously, most fighters would have either:
a) given up on the ground with a broken nose and getting pounded for 2 rounds and looked for a way out of the fight (LJ did not and showed MAD dicipline ...MUCH respect)

or

b) tapped out way before Cat did (again MUCH respect)

These 2 earned a huge amount of respect from any fight fan that watched this bout

I agree on all but the judging.I will say that I missed some of the action due to me preparing for my fight but from what I saw the right people won.The warm up areas were the worst part.Oh the temp. inside was not suitable for warming up and the sound sucked. But with all that aside I thought it was one of the best night of fights I have been apart of in any way.The girl fight was amazing and thats coming from a guy who really doesn't like seeing beautiful girls hit each other in the face. They showed some of the biggest heart of the night.I would rather take it back to the red lion.

Bad news for you Jakness But driving conditions, fighting, reffing and judging have nothing to do with the venue. Lighting is the only factor there. And as far as your comment about the fighting I as well as many others will take offense. Might I ask when you are fighting next?? Maybe we can all talk about how much your fighting sucks after you work your ass off and get into the cage

When did he mention fighting? I think you need to re-read his post again. He stated "LIGHTING" not "FIGHTING"

The only down side to this show was the weather. This card was one of the best of the year if not tops. How many other shows do see with so many decisions? Great job on matchmaking Steve!
