Local Fighter Rankings

One area that I have been hesitant to go is local fighter rankings (and by local I mean ANYONE who has fought on a Colorado/Wyoming card). The reason being is that I didn't know how to do it without offending everyone. Well, I think we have a solution. Here is how it will work.

Each Wednesday we will post a ranking poll where registered users will be able to vote for the fighters they want in a particular weight division. We will do one weight division a week, starting with the Heavyweights. I will try and put as many names as possible on the poll but also leave room for write in candidates.

We will also post the previous week’s poll results on that Tuesday. This will give everyone some time to discuss the poll results and also think about the next weight division that will be voted on.

I’m open for suggestions or ideas for this new content feature. Please feel free to pass them along.

Here is what the schedule will look like:
July 25th – Heavyweights
August 1st – Light Heavyweights
August 8th - Middleweight
August 15th - Welterweight
August 22nd - Lightweight
August 29th – Featherweight
September 5th – MMA Schools
(the school with the highest rank/votes will receive a donation from MMAbuzz.com)
(repeat)

I think fighter's records should be made available so it is easier to choose. also will you have a Amature ranking, and a Pro ranking?

I will include the records (or as much as I can). I thought about the Pro/Ammy thing. I think I'm just going to go overall. It's going to take 7 weeks between each divisions vote, if I did pro AND ammy it would be way too much waiting for the next poll.

The whole ranking thing is too subjective. How do you justify a fighters ranking? We can use records but records in this sport can be very decieving. Most fighters with amazing records have very few quality opponents on their resume, while several .500 fighters have many quality opponents on their resume. Myself I see rankings as a pointless popularity contest that will further the movement to build fighters records like they do in boxing and we will see less and less competive mma fights as fighters look to move on to bigger shows out of state.

I kind of agree with you, but I think rankings can help build great fights. i think rankins shoudl be because of your record, and because of who you fought.

'fan', you make very solid points and things I have thought much about, and one of the reasons I really don't want to include records (especially for ammys).

But, I know each promotion has their own individual ranking system for their own promotion (see martialartsradio.com). I want to try and make one overall ranking.

And yes, I think it's going to turn into more of a popularity contest than anything. But, it will be the voice of the fighters and fans and that is what this site is about. Hopefully people take the ranking with a big grain of salt and don't put too much weight in them.

I am not sure if it is even worth the effort if you truly think that it is going to end up being a popularity contest more than anything.

Is there a ranking system in the Colorado MMA community or are promoters just throwing 2 guys in the same weight class in the ring together?

I am going to do two different polls each week, one for pro and one for amateurs.

Can't wait to see how this goes.

Bet I will vote for who i think is the best fighter in each division. I think it will create matchups the fans want to see among ammys

It will also be interesting to see how many people have seen a lot of the fighters. Some of the local guys have only fought on Kickdown, some only on either NME or TOS, so it will give us a good idea of how many people actually go to shows.
