Local Heavyweight Rankings - March 2008
heavyweight-fighter-ranking.jpg

It's time again for the Local Fighter Rankings. It's been nearly six months since we did these last. Lots of have changed since then. Many new faces to this weight class, including some very talented big men.
What I need from you is help completing the list. If you know of a fighter not on the list or incorrect location/gym please let me know. Voting will start next Wednesday for this weight class.

HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHTERS

PRO

James Funny – Colorado Fight Factory (Colorado Springs)
Joe Serna - (Denver)
Damond Clark - Wyoming Ground-N-Pound (Wyoming)
Jeff Ford - (Denver)
Brian Cristina - (Denver)
Gary Borum – Joint Forces (Colorado Springs)

AMATEUR
Drew Knapp - Deadman's Dojo (Colorado Springs)
Ted Cano - Infinite Martial Arts (Loveland)
Andy Goldsmith - Kongo Do (Colorado Springs)
Mike Chickering - Kongo Do (Colorado Springs)
Matt Swortwood - Kongo Do (Colorado Springs)
Louis Lloyd – Kongo Do (Colorado Springs)
Joe Lake – Rude Effex (Pueblo)

Notes:
- Our current definition of a local fighter is any fighter who has competed (within the past 12 months) in the states of Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, or South Dakota.

- If a fighter has competed in multiple weight classes within the past 12 months then that fighter can be ranked in both weight classes.

- We were looking at changing the way the voting happens but for simplicity sake we are going to continue with the way it was before. Most votes = highest ranked fighter. The site doesn’t have the resources (mainly time) to send out ballots, count ballets, tally, etc to implement a better system….yet.

I would say research research and research. Lets start throwing some names liek Pointon is, lets start talking about recent wins/losses for the people on the list. Lets agree on a list, lets get the creative juices flowing with this!

Pointon? You're gonna give me a bad name! People will think I'm related to Ross Pointon or something lol.

ChrisZacher said:

my bad

BTW lets get peeps from other areas of Co other then Denver and COS to throw some names out there.

what about that shane carwin??
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

I would say he is a big show fighter, and not a local fighter. The ranking are for local CO fighters.
March 14, 2008

MMAbuzz said:

I'll add Shane to the list. He's really only fought locally so far (to my knowledge).

Yes he's on the UFC 84 card, but I still think he deserves to be in the rankings.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

I thought he fought in the WEC too before Zuffa bought them.
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

yeah but on the last list we had names like mike nickels, alvin robinson, luke cadillio, bang ludwig, donold cerronie, and cory hill,
so y not have him?
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

those guys, IMO should not be on the list. I think that fighters who fight in CO shoudl be on it, so it will be a CO ranking, not a "if you are from Co ranking".
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

so where does the status end, when u fight out side of the states listed above, or when u fight oon a big show?/
March 14, 2008

MMAbuzz said:

I'm open to discuss this. I think Bang, Nickels, Robinson SHOULD be on the list. I still consider them a local fighter. And they've all fought IN Colorado in the past 12 months.

Guys like Marquardt shouldn't be in this. Although he's from Colorado and plays a big role in the local scene I don't consider him a local fighter.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

I think when you start fighting on bigger shows outside of the states.

which all of thos enames you listed, but Nickles fight now.
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

so if you fought in the state in the past 12 months then u are on the list but if havent then u cant be on the list?
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

Bang is not a local fighter, s**t, most of his fights are outside Co, as in Alvin Robinson, who has had 3 straight fights in the ufc this year.

I think this ranking could eb a tool to set up meaningful matches is this state, rather then state the obvious tha Alvinson, and bang ar etop in the weigh tclas sin colorado.

its the fighters who fight in the Co shows who need this, not them, who ar etrying to mark on the global rankings.

BTW Bang has fought just a smuch outside of Co as Marquardt has.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

yeah I feel if you havn't fought in Co in the last 12 months you shoudl not be on it. this should be to help promoters her eput on more meaningful fights.
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

i agree with that 12 month limit.. so now we gotta do some reserch..lol
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

fight finder..woot woot

i mean props ot bang, and alvin, but they ar ebeyond teh CO scene now, lets look into teh gusy trying to get out of teh scene.
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

cool.. so once again does shane quilafy he has fought in co in the past 12 months right?
March 14, 2008

MMAbuzz said:

Alvin last fought in CO in Feb 07, thus missing the 12 month rule. Same with Bang, same with Corey Hill, same with Yo Momma....o snap...I miss Brendon...

March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

I woudl say Co on a regualr basis in teh last 12 months, which would be Carwin. Hill has not fought in Co in the last 12 months, and bang has fought wya mor etimes outside of Co then in.

I would say you would have to have foght more in CO then anywhere else in the last 12 months.

So i guess carwin would be in, but bang just fights to sell $ for Sven, and isn't really thriving for the CO big picture.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

basically Carwin yes

hill no,

alvin no

bang no

especailly hill, who pretty much disowned Co.
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

what about nickels, luke cadillio, coboy cerrone.

cowboy yes
luke maybe?
nickels fought twice in the past 12 months 1 in co 1 in the uFC
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

I would say yes to cowboy, no to luke, and yes to nickles.

so yes cowboy an dnickles

and no to luke

March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

wait didnt Cowboy fight in Japan befor ehis WEc fight? I wonder if he will eb fighthing in the WEc again, probably no fo rhim too.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

naw neve rheard of them.
March 14, 2008

Killaking173 said:

in the past year he has fought 2in co 2 out, his last 2 being out
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

i would say no, IMO about cowboy then, seems liek he has moved on.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

Ok sop they are all good fighters, I know. But my question is who is the best dancer? I wanna know who can cut a rug.

ok in all seriousness I think the rankings should stick to local fighters Professional and Amateur. Big name fighters shouldn't be mentioned really. Like the hawaii rankings don't include BJ Penn, or Kendall Grove. They contain Fighters who actually fight in the state. I like your guys's 12 month rule though, but I think if a fighter is fighting EliteXC, UFC, WEC or other big name Orgs. they shouldn't be included.
March 14, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

I agree 100%. if used right these local rankings could be used by promoters to make great match ups and even make fights motivated to try going p them
March 14, 2008

Kate said:

you can def pull Cano if applying the 12 month rule (which I think is great btw)...Cano may fight again, but prolly not anytime soon.
March 14, 2008

Kate said:

Oh, and how was Elliot Marshall not on the first HVYWT rankings? Im pretty sure he's alphadog for Colo Hvywt, Carwin top for super Hvywt.

Concerning Alvin Ide say not only the fact that he's moved on to the UFC in the last year, but he has also physically moved to the state of Arizona, so he is no longer a resident of Colo.
