Tap or Snap: Fight Analysis

Colorado Springs -July 14th, 2007 - First thing is first, before I go on to cover some of the fights from Saturday's Tap or Snap: Art of War card, let me share with you guys some very valuable lessons I learned that night.

1. No matter if you wear a dog collar and carry a weird Klingon looking weapon to the stage, it doesn't give you the right to act like you are going to tap gloves, and instead, you try to cheap shot someone.
2. It's all right to witness that, because in the end they usually lose.
3. If you pull out of a fight the first time, well, I'm sure you have your reasons, if you pull out of a fight a second time, you really should think of a new hobby. There is no excuse whatsoever for such unprofessional behavior. Not only do I not want to see someone fight again after doing that, I don't even want to hear about them fighting in Colorado.
4. Finally, if you bring people to come and watch you fight, make sure they show some class. I can understand booing before a fight, but to boo after your fighter got beat is truly something to be ashamed of. These people are going to make it to where no one is going to want to watch the fighter they support, because in the end they are just not worth the hassle.

People should read those four lessons, and absorb them. Without further ado....

John Guillen def. Josh Childress
Both fighters started this fight circling each other, and look rather tentative. Gillian started the action by throwing a left low kick, which Childress quickly grabbed and went for a take down that led to both fighters almost coming out of the ropes. The ref started it back on there feet for some reason, and I have no idea why. If both fighters it caught up in the ropes, they should be started in the center of the ring at the position they had previously.
After the stand up there was a brief flurry that lead to a clinch by Childress. He attempted a hip throw take down, which landed Gillian in mount. Soon after moving for better position, he soon had what I could only call reverse mount. Not only that, but he soon started throwing hammer punches form that position, and quickly started hammering them down form regular mount that led to the ref stopping the fight at 1:23 of the first round.

Aaron Truxell def. Bryant Craven
This fight had entertaining written all over it from the start. Craven came walking out to the fight looking pumped, and rocking a bandana like he was a back robber from the wild west. Both fighters started circling at the beginning of the match, with Truxell going for a low left kick, which led to Craven getting the leg, and going for a take down. Craven landed inside Truxell's half guard, but soon got out of it, and had full mount on Truxell. Craven went for an arm bar from the mount, which led to Truxell reversing, and ending up inside Craven's guard where he peppered him with some light punches. Craven then attempted another arm bar, but Truxell quickly got out of it, and had side mount. In a quick scramble, Truxell soon had his back and ended it by rear naked choke at 1;27 of round one. A quick note should be pointed out, this was taken of two days notice by Truxell, and this was his pro debut!

Brett Roller def. John Nunnery
This fight was the main event, and it lived up to it's title.  Brett Roller's last fight in Tap or Snap was probably the best fight I have personally seen in Tap or Snap against professional LW Champ, Jose Luis Murrillo. Both fighters came out looking intense in their usual manner, and it was soon evident in the ring that they both came to fight.                Both fighters came out throwing punches, and Nunnery soon had a nice hip throw take down, but soon Roller soon was back on his feet, which led to the same exact take down again. Roller then secured a take down, which led to back control by Roller. He then attempted a rear naked choke, but was unable to finish it, so he then started throwing punches. Eventually both fighters got into the ropes, and soon they were stood up. When the action was started again, Roller threw some mean punches, one which landed and knocked Nunnery on the ground. Roller quickly capitalized on it, and got his back where he finished with a rear naked choke at 3:44 of the first round. Brett was soon given the 145lb professional belt, to the dismay of some very disrespectful Nunnery fans. This was by far the fight of the night, and I hope to see more entertaining fights as title defenses for his future.

Unless he was suddenly and freakishly sick or injured, Maldonado should be barred from fighting in CO. That's bad joo-joo.

Thank you !!! fighters ,fans,staff,commission,and crew !
Congrats to all of the fighters for stepping in the ring and giving it your all !!every one looked good.
Aaron & Bryant what a great fight ,I am sure we will see these to war again ,like I am sure we will see John Nunnery and Roller one day square off.
Congrats Brett Roller our first :Tap or Snap feather weight champion

To answer a few questions some had. John Moldanado sat 30 days and paid a fine to the commission and I put him on the card every one needs a second chance.I dont know what happened last night but now he has to go before the commission to ever fight again in Colorado, and yes he has fought before so ????

Thanks again to everyone and a special thanks to the Joint Forces that help us out Saturday morning.

p.s ( if you want lights buy a lamp,if you want good fights buy a Tap Or Snap ticket.

My show notes

- I really liked the venue. It was easy to see the ring from any vantage point, bathrooms were close (and clean), and the ring looked good.
- This was the first show to have 3 pro fights on one card in Colorado Springs.
- Big congrats to Truxell for getting out of that armbar. That fight didn't last that long but went back and forth. I'd love to see a rematch of that one.
- Next Tap or Snap will be in Castle Rock, August 18th. Fighters on the card, Frankie McIvery, James Funny vs. Chris Camozzi, and a few others were mentioned by I forgot who.
- Not sure why John Maldonaldo didn't fight. Rumors were that he went with his brother Chris (who fought and won earlier in the night) to the hospital. Either way I felt bad for Jason Brenton who brought a boat load of people down from Denver to watch him fight.
- Fortherelentless.com was definitely in the house. I like the way the gear is looking, very nice.
- Eric Lalone once again did a great job on the mic, and even made it through the few bumps in the road very well.

I think that's it, if I think of more I'll post em.

The venue was great! Much more professional than an abandoned super market. And yes, three pro fights was a first. Some people are just too cheap to make a card like that.

Just to clear something up that armbar was not tight had it been the out come would have been different.I threw it sloppy and without softning him up.I'm taking nothing away from aaron he is very tough and very strong but i made the mistake and he capitilized.I sincerly hope we get the chance to do it again.

Didn't this Maldonado character refuse to fight another time. Has anyone even seen this guy fight yet. 2nd chances are fine but lets not go overboard. This guy needs to find a new hobby. The preparations of the fight are too much for Maldonado, I'd hate to see what happened to him if he actually stepped into the ring. We'd probably see a wild banshee or a scared cat.

Being relatively new to town I'm disappointed. Were you guys at the same event I was at? Outside of the venue being nice looking, almost everything about the event sucked ass.

First - No National Anthem was performed - what the hell is up with that?

Second - *Comment Removed by Admin*

Third - The sound was G-d awful - echoing everywhere. I couldn't understand Eric or the fighters or the sponsors when they talked into the microphone.

Fourth - When seven out of eight fights (with three pro fights on the card) are stopped in the first round - that's a poor showing on the part of the match maker.

Look, I give credit where credit is due and I also tell it like it is. That event was crap. It really was. I believe that the favorable write-ups on this message board might have something to do with the advertising dollars that Tap or Snap puts towards this website.

I feel completely cheated out of the $40 I spent on a ticket. No way am I going to the Castle Rock event.

No Way Jose an answer to all....

First- the national anthem was played before the main event just like every promotion does i.e ufc, wec, and most colorado shows... so yes the anthem was played and i have been to events where they do not play it ever,,

Second- You didnt drink enough and even though it is nice to see hot girls in the ring this is a fighting event not americas next top model.. and if your actually fighting its less of a distraction...

Third- I personally could give a s**t what the announcer has to say once again your there to watch fights not to listen to how wonderful eric sounds on the mic.. maybe it was the location you were sitting cause there has been mixed feelings about the sound...

Fourth- Nobody can predict how a fight is going to turn out.. if you watched ufc 73 that was supposed to be one of the best cards ever and more than half i believe 5 were finished in the first round... so does that mean that the match makers in the ufc suck no that is just how fighting works when you get caught you get caught thats all there is to it..

so yes give your credit where credit is do and keep supporting local fighters if you are an mma fan if you go to fights to find something to b***h about then go check out other shows and see how they compare. building a good show takes a long time its not like people just let you use there venues for free it costs a ton of money to put on a show and i honestly could care less where its at just as long as i can put on a show for all the die hard mma fans here in colorado and get my name out there so thanks everybody who came to the show to support local fighters even you no way jose

I think Roller already pointed all the s**t that is wrong with you stuff, either way, I can for one say that my opinons are swayed with money or anything, I mean come on, what do you think I am? I wrote this prior to teaching class and am only posting it now, so some of this stuff has already been addressed.

I thought the show was very well put together, and most of the people I talked to in attendance did as well. To address some of NO WAYS comments let me hit them point by point.

#1 As per the boxing commission, the National Anthem is played before the main event. This is what is done at the major shows and they want to keep the professionalism up.

#2. That is your opinion; a lot of people think the complete opposite. If you are referencing their attire, it is what all ring card girls have worn for as long as I can remember.

#3 There was a small problem with an overheated amplifier. The problem was fixed and we back going strong afterward. I was in charge of hiring the disc jockey service and the guy who owns the company is a good friend of mine, and it was dealt with. As far as echoing, I didn’t hear any of that and I received all sorts of compliments about how well it sounded (except for the minor problem). If it was hard to understand the fighters that’s understandable, they just got done winning a fight. With any large venue like that it will echo a little. Sound problems can plague any event. Another show in Colorado Springs didn’t have sound for first 5 fights. That kind of stuff happens.

#4 The days are not the same when a fight seemed to be mismatched by the round in which it ended. There are a number of fights that end quickly because someone got “caught,” even though it was a quality fight up until that point. Just watch any of the TUF series and you see the same thing.

Finally; to insinuate that the favorable write up came because of advertising dollars is outright WRONG. Mike is one of the most neutral guys on the planet and does not sell out. He will talk about the good things and items that need improvement with any show he visits. It’s just the way he is.

If you have any questions about this or you want to talk to me, I invite you to call me; 719-630-8373

I don't like the anthem being played before the main event. Seems weird to me. It seems to throw the crowd off as well. I see looks on faces that say "what the hell?" Most of the shows I've been to play it at the beginning of the show (which seems proper to me). I know Tap or Snap has been doing this but none of the Denver shows do.

The national anthem being played right before the main event comes directly from the Colorado State Boxing Commission. Their reason is that everyone is seated, all eyes are on the center of the ring, and nobody will be off getting a beer or a cigarette while it is playing.

I actually prefer it for just those reasons.

I'm not used to it being played before the main event just yet. I still like it at the beginning of a show. To me it is THE way to start off a sporting event. I'm always a bit confused when they play it before the main event. It always feels like a malfunction, like, 'hey we finally found the national anthem cd'.

Also, I was at the baseball all star game a few years ago and right after the anthem a stealth flew over, I still got chills from that moment.
July 17, 2007

David said:

I can understand that line of thought but it's still not the appropiate time to play it. The anthem should be at the beginning of the show. It's a shame that the boxing commission gets so much say in the matter. Then again, they don't pull that in Denver.

MMAbuzz, that's the exact sort of thing I sense in the rest of the crowd. And when there's already been some glitches it just adds to the list (not that this IS a glitch).

I would to rebute the coments made about nunnerys fans after the fight, I saw the people who started the altercation and although they were there rooting for nunnery they are in no way personal friends or his, they grew up in the same town and heard his name mentioned on the radio so I hope this doesnt make it tough for him to get fights because he is a great guy who i think has a big future in the sport.

I'll be honest with you. A promoter might think otherwise because of the people that came to see him fight. Promotions are a business and anything that might hurt your business will make you hesitate a little.

They may not be his fans, just people who know of him, but they might make someone think twice before bringing him into fight. Is is right. Probably not, but that's the way it works.

I really enjoyed their fight though. Very back and forth.
