From ufcmania.com:

"The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) is withholding $25,000 of Renato “Babalu” Sobral’s $50,000 earnings for choking out David Heath in the second round last night during their UFC 74: “Respect” light heavyweight showdown.

That’s because the Brazilian refused to release the submission hold after Heath had tapped out. The referee during the fight, Steve Mazzagatti, tried desperately to pry off Babalu, but he kept on squeezing until Heath was unconscious and twitching on the Octagon canvas.

He’s not sorry about it, either, according to a recent article on the Orange County Register.

Here’s a snip from Babalu:

“He has to learn respect. He deserved that.”

We’re told that NSAC Executive Director, Keith Kizer, will review the footage and determine whether or not to fine “Babalu” for his actions.

And when he does that, Kizer is going to realize that $25,000 is not enough punishment.

Disgraceful."

The babalu respect level just dropped even more, I can't believe that s**t. I found ou about the choke before the event even started.. Wow, just f**king wow, he shoudln't even be in the UFC right now IMOP. Mayeb spitting on people also shows f**king respect.

Cote, wow, just wow, that was meeeaaan.

Crane showed that in Huerta fights anyone liek Stevenson, Penn, or any good 155 grappler, he's toast.

Stevenson looked good, now time to match up against BJ.

GSP total f**king domination, TOTAL!, also total class.

Randy..ma. I refuse to pic a winner in a fight he fights against, ever youhear that MIke?>

your comment about Huerta is 100% off. The fact that Crane had Huerta's back, and couldn't capitalize, says that Huerta can hang with the best submission guys in the world.

I guess Babalu held it because Heath wore a shirt with Bab's mug shot on it, wow.

I wonder then how Babs would handle Tito. Hmmmm would Bab's then choke himself out after Tito would destroy him?

makes you think.

still no excuse what so ever. Mayeb the one side ass kicking with the missing gallons of blood wasn't enough. That is the only time i agree with teh crowd booing.

Just looking at the "gif" it looks like Babalu really only kept the choke on a few seconds after the tap, but that with his coments just make it looks bad for everyone in MMA- GSP looked great, he had a great game plan, what was Kos thinking? Gotta love Couture, one bad old man!

COUTURE BREAKS ARM

Even Superman feels it from time to time.

Following yet another feather-in-his-cap performance Saturday at UFC 74 in Las Vegas, real life superhero Randy Couture (16-8), was informed Sunday by doctors that he’d broken his arm during his third round TKO stoppage of Gabriel Gonzaga (8-2).

Couture, 44, sustained the injury Saturday blocking a Gonzaga right high kick with his left forearm, cleanly separating the ulna bone with a “nightstick fracture, ” a break common in law enforcement circles. The injury placed the UFC heavyweight champion’s arm in a splint for six weeks. The appendage will not need a cast.

“It’s not displaced, so the doctors think it will reattach in about a week and a half, ” said Couture, who embarks on a South African adventure to shoot a leading role in major motion picture “The Scorpion King – The Akkadian” in nearly six weeks. It is believed the injury will not effect Couture’s shooting schedule.

The following are the REPORTED fight purses to participants on the UFC 74 "Respect" PPV card. Remember these don't include the many unreported bonuses given to fighters by the company. And a note on those bonuses - Dana White said he is not giving them out until the steroid test results come back from the NSAC.

-Randy Couture ($250,000) def. Gabriel Gonzaga ($45,000)
-Georges St. Pierre ($140,000) def. Josh Koscheck ($10,000)
-Roger Huerta ($34,000) def. Alberto Crane ($4,000)
-Joe Stevenson ($32,000) def. Kurt Pellegrino ($8,000)
-Patrick Cote ($24,000) def. Kendall Grove ($12,000)
-Renato "Babalu" Sobral ($50,000) def. David Heath ($6,000)
-Frank Mir ($72,000) def. Antoni Hardonk ($8,000)
-Thales Leites ($18,000) def. Ryan Jensen ($4,000)
-Clay Guida ($14,000) def. Marcus Aurelio ($30,000)

Total fighter pay outs: $761,000

IMO on these pays Kos got punk'd he should be making more than that... 25,000 is pretty f**ked up to take a babalu.. Yes maybe he held on to long, but hell if he would have cheated to win (riods) he would have only lost 2,500 make sense I THINK NOT

^I was more agreeing with the Babalu comment, but when a guy you are fighting makes over 10 times what you do in a fight I don't think its fair, even if it he signed the contract.

why isn't it fair? this isn't kindergarden, when KOS signed teh contract he wasn't established. If he really didn't want to fight GSP, he could fo said no. he obviously took it, so we shouldn't be sitting here worrying about his paycheck.

yeah, guess if he won he would have made 20, you sure you don't work for the UFC or something. Usually they don't have a lot of options with the first contract and the UFC bullies them into signed long term contracts for peanuts instead of giving them like a 3 fight deal where if they do win all three they can come back and pay them more.
August 29, 2007

ChrisZacher said:

??? bullies them? You know how many c level fighters are signed to three fight contract deals? he probably signed it because at the time he saw it as a guaranteed job.

exactly, they sign the guys they don't see as having a lot of potential to 3 fight deals and guys with potential to longer term deals so they lock them in at that lower rate. They would have to pay too much if they gave the up and coming stars 3 fight deals and had to renegotiate after that.

How the hell do you know this? Is there some secret hidden KPeazy camera inside Dana White's office, or do you do what like 99% of the MMA online community does, and believe it after reading it over, and over and over and over again till you start believing 1 2=897686

Listen Monte Cox even said that Rich FranKlin signed that long contract rather then a short one, so he could guarantee he would have fights in the future.

If you think from the business side of things its simple. Pay the least possible amount while still being able to make the highest possible amount. I don't really read what others say, its just my opinion. IMO if KOS is fighting someone that is making $140K and he's making $10K its a mismatch, just like weight.
