Worldwide Fighting Championship presents Armageddon

Written by J.R.Gordon

Saturday night, April 12, 2008 the Denver Coliseum opened the arena doors for the return of the Worldwide Fighting Championship to Colorado. There was a stacked fight card with UFC, K-1, IFL, Kick Down, Ring of Fire and Gladiator Challenge veterans as well as debut fighters looking to make a name in the blossoming MMA market.

Now to the fights.

Bout one: Manuel Pachuch Vs Zac Chavez. Chavez got a quick takedown, and several reversals followed. After working their way back to standing Chavez got a second takedown into side control and from there he locked in the Kimura for the win at :45 of round one.

Bout two: Nicco Garcia Vs Martin Montoya. Garcia came out with a punch flurry that knocked down Montoya. Garcia followed him to the mat, landed a few more strikes and the referee stopped the bout giving Garcia the TKO win at :25 round one.

Bout three: EJ Howe Vs Gabe Marquez. Both fighters came out striking until Howe got a standing guillotine that Marquez escaped by way of a slam takedown. The fighters then scrambled to their feet and Howe got a takedown, took back control, opened up with GNP then set in the RNC for the tapout victory at 1:53 round one.

Bout four: Shawn Flannagan Vs Jamie Addie. Addie flurried with an early barrage of strikes that dropped Flannagan. Flannagan however recovered quickly and Addie worked some GNP before both fighters stood. Off of a bodylock Addie got a takedown then he took back control and worked his GNP attack until the referee stopped the bout giving Addie tha TKO win at 2:38 of round one.

Bout five. Alfredo Corona Vs Anthony Warner. Corona got a quick takedown, transitioned to back control and set in the RNC for the win at :54 of round one.

Bout six: Tyler Brooks Vs Dan Wilson. Wilson set in a guillotine choke off of a takedown, but Brooks defended and worked his way free. Still on the ground Wilson was active with submission attempts off of his back , but Brooks worked to pass guard, take side control then back control and from the back he worked some GNP to set in the fight winning RNC at 2:08 of round one.

Bout seven: Nick Buschman Vs George Roop. Both fighters came out with good strikes and Roop knocked down Buschman then worked a brief flurry of GNP until the referee stopped the bout giving the TKO win to Roop at :24 of round one.

Bout eight: Rocky Johnson Vs Henry Martinez. This was a three round war of attrition. Most of the strikes throught the entirety of this fight occured with the fighters clinched. Each was able to land good punches and knees. Round one had Martinez controlling the ground action with positional dominance and GNP. Round two was a very even round and round three was mostly Martinez working GNP from the top while Johnson stayed very active with submission attempts off of his back. When asked for the scores the judges unanimously saw the fight in favor of Martinez.

Bout nine: Steve Sharp Vs Mat Ver Halen for the WFC Lightheavyweight championship. Sharp controlled the action for all of round with positional dominance and GNP while Ver Halen was kept busy defending strikes. Round two saw Sharp again controlling the ground action. After several submission attempts and lots of good elbow strikes Sharp sunk in an armbar for the submission victory at 3:07 of round two. Sharp is still the WFC Lightweight champion.

Bout 10: Dan Severn Vs Damon Clark. Clark came out early with strong leg kicks and good jabs, but after rushing Clark into the cage Severn got the takedown. On the mat Severn worked some GNP to get into side control and set up the fight ending Kimura lock at 2:30 of round two.

Bout 11: Shonie Carter Vs John Cronk for the WFC Middleweight title. There was minimal standing striking throughout this bout. Against the cage the fighters exchanged knee strikes and Cronk scored the majority of takedowns while trying to set in either arm or shoulder submissions. Carter however avoided all the submission attempts and he controlled position for the majority of the time as well as landing more GNP. When the winner was announced it was Shonie Carter that took home the WFC Middleweight championship by unanimous decision.

Bout 12: Jeff Ford Vs Wesley Correira for the WFC Heavyweight championship. Both fighters came out with strong strikes and each landed hard shots that rocked the other. Once the fight hit the ground Correira was on the bottom and Ford worked GNP from inside his guard. Correira was unable to escape the barrage of punches from Ford and the referee called a stop to the bout at 4:59 of round one giving Ford the win and the Heavyweight championship.

With knockouts, submissions and fights going the distance this show had something to please everyone. Please be sure to check the site calendar for upcoming events.

...and JR didn't even mention Shonie Carter's gold lamee banana hammock fight shorts....

seriously, a few observations from ringside:
-Damon Clark and the Beast traded shots standing. Damon actually knocked Dan down with a right cross(he wanted the fight to be on the ground anyway) while Dan's right hook left Damon stagered on the fence shaking out the cobwebs.

-Sharp looked better than I've seen him fight recently. He dominated this fight the entire time (then promptly tossed his lunch in the ring)

-Jeff Ford was fighting a bad respiratory infection and almost had to pull out of the fight. Props to him for fighting when some others would had bagged - and winning. He's talked retirement recently....but come on Jeff, you got the belt. Keep going.

-Flannigan v Addie was a great local math-up. Both guys brought it all and both landed strikes that could have ended it. Congrats to Jamie, and Shawn is a tough young kid that I'm sure we'll see in the cage again soon.

-one of the drunkest crowds I've ever seen.

Was a pretty good show and Jeff Ford looked the best I have seen him and really resurrected his MMA career. As I said in the post fight interview he should stay with it-he worked the clinch and those shots to the body of Cabbage were devastating. A great performance by him. Damond Clark (was sure proud of him) he just lost it with the exchange between he and Severn but it was a good fight. All of those involved were really cool to work with over the weekend and thanks for the kindness from all. Had alot of top level fighters in the area over the weekend too. Good to see. Rocky Johnson and Henry Martinez was a very tough and hard fought bout. Sharp was "sharp". Dr. Alex............the absolute best in the business.S. Alley

I would say ford would need to win a couple more before you can say his career was resurrected. He's lost 4 in a row. He needs a couple more wins against some who hasn't lost 5 out of their last 7 fights.

While one win for Ford may not redefine a fighter, I will say Ford looked very good in this fight. As a fan I'd watch his next fight with anticipation. His submission defense has yet to be proven, but he had solid stand-up skill and a good take down defense.

Also, forgot to mention Shonie Carter's stamina. He never gassed (coming from low altitude). Talked to him afte the fight and he said he's been running rounds on a treadmill at 11-13miles/hr with a snorkel on.

Hardcore? Cmon now. If he was wearing the scuba flippers too...well..THAT would be hardcore.

And I've never heard of the snorkel trick...very clever. I can just imagine Shonie at the local Gold's gym..banana hammock on, snorkel in tact...and running like a mad man.

Thank you DI, appreciate you saying that. He rocked me with something, I just dont remember what.... I was happy to show people I'm not shy of striking. Felt real comfortable for the first time. Also, I think this is a good weight class for me. Not making excuses however, everone or almost everyone in 45 has a reach on me. I have heard of many 45ers that will be coming down to 35 so I will enjoy it for now. Just wanted to say thank you again to Flannigan, he put up one hell of a fight. I should be fighting again soon and look forward to making some positive steps in my fighting career. Thank you everyone at GUMM MMA for getting ready for this fight!

I hear a rough guesstimate of 600 people at this show.

Kinda sounds like
Battlequest ~1700
WFC ~1000
Steel City Rumble ~1980

*and these are very rough estimates. If the promoters want to confirm this I will change my comment.

I totally dissagree with the statement made by fight fan. If you think for one second that buschman will outclass josh huber then i think you are sadly mistaken. In my opinion I think that they will be a better match up than you think. I feel as though huber will have the upper hand with his knock out power.

ChrisZacher said:

Hubber has been proven and has fought guys so much biger then him, and walked through them. Hubber would win in such a fashion Schmelzter woudl have to force Nick to fight at 125, and then trye hyping him up there.

Also Nick Bushman hasn't paid the dues yet to fight brett roller. that would be a huge step down.

Don't get me wrong, I am sure bushman is good people, but certain peeps who represent him make me not want to even watch him fight.
April 25, 2008

ChrisZacher said:

look at it liek this, Roller just beat an undefeated 155lber, and Bushman just got knocke dout in 15 secs.

Also do your research on Hubber, he has paid his dues, done hsi work, and prove dhimself without having someone come on line an dhype him up.

also i think we can have a legit converastion in another threa dthat doesn't involve teh joke of a promoter who signed tommy morrison to fight. Seriously, lets talk about this BS some were else.

I'd have to agree, I have Fought Josh, and he is tough, I think I hit him about 200 times in the first period and he just kept comming, I won the fight, but not for one minute did I think he was going to quit. I knew we were going the full distance from the start. As for Nic, yeah he hasn't done too bad, but honestly he hasn't fought the guys that Huber has fought and I think that Huber would handle him pretty easy. I think Roller, Huber or Addie would beat him. He's just too small. Roller is a better wrestler (Beat Tom Clum in state finals, wrestled at Western State after I left), Huber is a better striker, likes to brawl and doesn't stop for the whole match and Addie is so much bigger than him. Jamie has been working at Gumm's so I don't need to say anything else.

Hope all is well

Jamie ill fight you again at 145 before you drop. i cant make 135 thats to much for me to cut.
April 25, 2008

Jamie Addie said:

Thanks Lannon, appreciate the ups. Spellman, why would you want to fight me again, you already beat me up 2 years ago, plus not for one fight have cut weight yet except my most recent. Everyone I have fought except Huber has cut from 60 , you said yourself at one point u were walking around at 70. Don’t get me wrong, I'd love the chance to get that one back, I had only had 3 weeks of training (the perfect example of people that arent ready to fight) and still felt like I did ok. Anyway buddy, make 35 and I'm sure my coach would say ok. As for Buchman, he does have some experience recently and I think 35 will be a good weight for him. Nobody should underestimate anyone here, but more specifically Huber. That guy is so TUFF, literally I have never hit someone so hard and have them back to whooping my ass in such a short period of time. Huber is a lot like Lannon and myself, none of us really ever cut to make 45 and he will do well at 35. Roller too, he is a strong 45er and will do well at 35. Everyone should respect everyone and not talk trash, get in there and fight and see who comes out on top.
