Linland's opponent
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/josh_gross/05/07/lindland.mailbag/index.html?eref=T1
QUOTE: Of the forthcoming summer cards, few have generated as much curiosity as the bill promoted by Affliction, a premium clothing manufacturer whose skull-and-crossbones inspired designs are just as likely to be worn by ripped fighters as they are by fast-food-fueled wannabes.
Featuring a contingent of the sport's top heavyweights including Fedor Emelianenko, Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett and Pedro Rizzo, the July 19 event is expected to exceed an unheard of $6 million in fighter purses, which, while being wonderful for the athletes involved, has led many to speculate how long the company can survive before finances dictate otherwise.
Though Affliction representatives remain tight lipped, discussion surrounding the card -- appropriately dubbed "Banned" after the UFC, and later EliteXC, prohibited fighters from wearing the clothing brand -- has escalated in recent weeks.
Among the group of handsomely compensated fighters, middleweight Matt Lindland (20-5) is perhaps the hungriest to compete. Early talk had the former UFC contender taking rematches against David Terrell or Murilo Bustamante.
However, SI.com learned Tuesday that the leading candidate to face the gangly wrestler is Brazilian middleweight Fabio Negao, owner of an 8-3 record. Splitting his last six bouts, Negao is coming off a loss in December to Rousimar Palhares, as well as two other defeats by Demian Maia (choke) and Ray Lazama (KO). South African middleweight Trevor Prangley had been discussed as a potential Lindland foe, but Affliction's decision to pit Lindland against Negao appears close to final.
When Lindland steps back into the cage this summer, it will have been 15 months since Emelianenko armbarred the Team Quest leader in less than three minutes in St. Petersburg, Russia. Turning 38 on May 17, Lindland has long been part of the discussion regarding 185-pound fighters who could challenge the division's best. Negao, despite a unanimous points victory over Roan Carneiro and the distinction of holding a BJJ black belt, doesn't seem to qualify.
With Lindland simply interested in fighting an opponent endowed with a strong pulse, the Brazilian will make do. Either way, fans of the pay-per-view card, which has recently been rumored to shift venues from Dallas to Anaheim, Calif., will probably happily shell out the money given the evening's main event: a showdown between the top heavyweight on the planet, Emelianenko (27-1, 1 NC), and former UFC champion Sylvia (24-4).
Also recently confirmed by both competitors, Barnett (21-5) and Rizzo (16-7) will meet in a rematch of an exciting 2001 contest that saw the Brazilian score an iconic knockout.

QUOTE: The announcement of the long rumored Affliction fight company became official last week, but a TV deal still looms in the air for the new promotion. One outlet in particular, Mark Cuban’s HDNet, had been mentioned as a possible carrier for the promotion’s first event, but it appears for now the brand will not land on the Dallas Mavericks owner’s network.
Andrew Simon, CEO of HDNet Fights, spoke to MMAWeekly Radio on Tuesday night and commented on the rumored deal, and while nothing was ever solidified, he did confirm that the two companies could still work together in the future.
“We talk to everybody and I wouldn’t say that any conversation is dead yet,” Simon stated. “You just never know. You know how this sport works, one day you think you’re not working together and the next day you might announce something.”
One thing that is for sure is the fact that the debut Affliction card will not take place in the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas. Simon says that was a scheduling and marketing conflict with the company.
“No, unless they move the date, we wouldn’t do a show on July 19 in Dallas,” he commented. “That’s too quick without the proper promotion there.”
Simon did compliment the new organization for the star power on its debut card and had kind words of encouragement for them on the cusp of their first event.
“Todd and Tom and those guys at Affliction are great guys and I wish them the best of luck,” he stated. “They have a monster card coming up. Everything you hear is just name after name. It will be a great event and from what I’m hearing it’s in Anaheim.”
But the door is not shut on a possible relationship between HDNet and Affliction just yet.
“Affliction… I would say, never say never,” said Simon in parting about the two companies working together.
Affliction is currently scheduled to hold its first event on July 19 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The main event features perennial No. 1 heavyweight fighter Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia

QUOTE:
- AFFLICTION VP ATENCIO DEBUNKS RUMORS
Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - by Tom Hamlin - MMAWeekly.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After months of hush-hush negotiations and a rumor mill working overtime, clothing company Affliction has stepped out of the shadows to announce its entry into fight promotion.
In an appearance on “Inside MMA” last week, Affliction vice president Tom Atencio announced a card to be held July 19 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., featuring a laundry list of top fighters including the ever-elusive Fedor Emelianenko.
Several published reports have put Emelianenko’s asking price at between $1.5 and $2 million. “Not true,” Atencio told MMAWeekly.com. “They’re rumors, they’re all rumors.”
So how then did Affliction secure the world’s most expensive fighter?
Atencio wouldn’t disclose Emelianenko’s base pay, but said, “It’s a considerable amount of money, but it’s not what everybody says.”
Still, with names like Fedor Emelianenko, Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett, and Matt Lindland – all high-priced free agents – it’s apparent that the promotion is starting in the red. Atencio says that’s fine. He doesn’t expect the July 19 show to make money.
“I don’t see how anybody can,” he said. “The only people who are making money in this business are the UFC and Scott Coker with Strikeforce. Do we plan on making money this first show? Absolutely not. The second and third? Hopefully.”
Plans for a second show in October and a third in February will round out the first phase of Affliction’s new venture. At that point, Atencio and his partners will decide whether they still want to be carnival barkers.
“This is new to us, so we’re going to take it step by step,” he said.
Already, Affliction has attracted the ire of existing promoters, particularly the Ultimate Fighting Championship, who banned them as a fighter sponsor. EliteXC followed suit shortly after, echoing the Las Vegas based organization’s non-compete policy. In a conference call for EliteXC’s upcoming “Saturday Night Fights” card on May 31 on CBS, president of live events Gary Shaw took a swipe at Affliction.
“I think they should stick to the clothing business,” Shaw said. ”I predict they will do one or two shows and then go back to making clothing.”
Atencio said he understands the arrows slung his way, though he didn’t expect Affliction to be banned by the UFC. As a lifelong fan of the sport, he simply sees his company’s venture as a natural extension of their success in the clothing industry.
“We’ve been involved in the industry as far as the clothing side of it, and I’ve been personally involved in MMA for over 16 years. I’m a huge fan of the sport so it just makes sense for us at this point,” he said.
Affliction plans to hold press conferences with several of its fighters on May 20 in Los Angeles and May 22 in New York.
